[Two Autograph Letters To The Rev H.M.Birch - Letter Of application And Of Thanks]..
Two bifolia, 18cm. The first, sixty-four line, to the Rev. Birch asking his support to show his MSS to people of his acquaintance who may be interested, and that he is the father of 24 children. The second, an eight line letter of thanks, acknowledging receipt of a stereotyped letter, and unclear as to whether it was meant sarcastically. Cambell appears an interesting figure. He was seemingly given to writing such light hearted letters chasing support as a pensioner. An example is printed by Edwin Ransford in Jottings By Ransford (1873) p.2 A Letter From Mr Andrew Cambell, And Reply. He trained at the College of Geneva, and after a short spell as Somerset House clerk, and the army, worked at Sadlers Wells 1814-38. He later became actor manager at the Royal Grecian Saloon (until 1851), and moved to the Royal Dramatic college in 1859. He also wrote a number of plays which were performed at Sadlers Wells in the 1830s. number He died in 1870.
