[Manuscript Petition To King George I For Repairs Of The St. Mary's Lutheran Church Of The Savoy From the Ministers And Church Wardens In Behalf Of Themselves And The Whole Lutheran Congregation]..
Bifolium, 27.5 x 20cm, text on first page & summary title on last page, centre pages blank, folded for storage (two exposed panels on last page soiled). An interesting survival of this petition to the king for financial aid with church repairs at St. Mary-le-Savoy church in Westminster. The petition tells us that the King had granted "...A chappell and Dwelling House for the Minister, a small peice of of Ground with a Vestry Room, and a small house upon it and passage to and from the said Chappell Ground and houses (sic)." The buildings were in need of repair and on examination it was found that the "...whole foundation of the Church [was] in ruin and Decay." The cost of repairs was £800 and the petitioners here request financial aid from his majesty. The church of St. Mary-le-Savoy was founded in 1694 and is the second oldest German-language church congregation in Britain. The congregation was eventually merged with the congregation of St. George (the oldest German-language congregation) and exists to this day.
