[EUROPEAN GRAND TOUR] [Pye Smith, John]. [Manuscript Journal Of A Tour In France, Switzerland & Italy In The Months of July, August And September, 1816 Part 1st (all produced)].
4to, 25.5cm, c.182ff (partially numbered on rectos to ff159). Original diced calf (rebacked with new spine), boards alike with single gilt rule outer border and inner gilt roll border of repeated gilt foliage and lyre design, modern photocopied clipping of DNB entry tipped to front free-endpaper.
A very extensive travel journal in neat copperplate script of some 50,000 covering the author’s travels in France, Switzerland and Italy including a robbery in Lyons, a trip to Rheims cathedral, guided mountain climbing, trips on Lake Maggiore and walks, a trip to the Biblioteca Reale at Turin and much more. Written in a very literary style, as much gazetteer as account, Pye Smith really brings the countryside and places that he visits to life. Son of a Sheffield bookseller, Pye-Smith was primarily an autodidact and seems to have achieved significant learning. His entry in DNB states him to have been tutor to Hackney’s Homerton college, theologian and regular contributor to the “Eclectic Review”.
