Single sheet, 21 x 27cm, engraved vignette of school at head, part printed certificate with manuscript insertions. This certificate records the achievement of James B. Doig for diligence and proficiency in German and writing at the Edinburgh George Heriot's Hospital School, George Heriot was a Scottish goldsmith who was the official goldsmith to King James VI of Scotland and Anne of Denmark and money lender. Following his death in 1624, an orphanage named George Heriot's Hospital was founded with money from his estate, which provided care and education to orphaned boys in Edinburgh. It was initially a free school, but became fee paying in the 1880s and survives today. A good copy (light staining along blank left edge & occ. light spotting).
