  • £18000

Single sheet, 310 x 390mm, red & black ink, paper covered episcopal seal & red ink validation stamp, folded in two and other fold lines from storage (splits along centre fold). A manuscript inhibition in decorative black and red ink with attractive titling and flourishes, preventing Thomas Bullock and ecclesiastical staff from leaving or causing nuisance during a planned episcopal visitation by the Bishop. It suggests some tension between Bullock and his bishop and worthy of further research. Bullock was, however, to remain in post for the following twenty years, passing away in 1760. Further manuscript notes to the verso, signed and dated Francis Gifford April 3rd 1740 records Gifford's serving of the inhibition on two members of Bullock's chapter, Francis Frank & Dr Thomas Fowle? "by shewing him the seal" and leaving a copy of the inhibition.
